Siding Maintenance Tips for Longevity
Published on December 28, 2025
Your siding is built to be durable, but it isn't invincible. Whether you have vinyl siding or fiber cement (like James Hardie), regular maintenance is key to keeping it looking great and performing well for decades.
1. Annual Cleaning
Dirt, dust, and mildew can accumulate on your siding over time. For most vinyl and fiber cement siding, a gentle wash once a year is sufficient.
- Method: Use a garden hose and a soft-bristle brush. Avoid high-pressure power washing, as it can drive water behind the siding and damage the surface.
- Solution: A mix of water and mild dish soap usually does the trick.
2. Inspect for Damage
Walk around your home at least twice a year and look for issues.
- Cracks or Holes: Impact from hail, baseballs, or rocks can crack siding. These gaps allow moisture to enter.
- Loose Panels: High winds can sometimes unseat vinyl panels. If you notice any flapping, they need to be re-secured.
- Caulking: Check the caulking around windows and doors. If it's cracking or peeling, it needs to be replaced to maintain a watertight seal.
3. Keep Plants at Bay
Trees and shrubs should be trimmed back so they don't brush against your siding. Wet leaves held against the wall can promote mold growth and trap moisture.
When to Call a Pro
If you notice widespread damage, warping, or signs of water intrusion inside your home, it's time to call DAB General Contractor for a professional assessment.
